What a True North Star Really Is (And Isn’t)
A North Star is not a revenue number.
It’s not a title.
It’s not a list of outcomes.
A true North Star is:
- A long-term vision (10–20+ years)
- Emotionally compelling
- Rooted in your values
- Grounded in contribution
- Clear enough to guide decisions
- Strong enough to pull you forward during uncertainty
Your North Star answers this question:
“If everything worked out… who would I be, how would I live, and what impact would I be proud to leave behind?”
How Clarifying My North Star Changed My Direction
There was a season in my life where I was “successful” on the outside but unclear on the inside.
Busy.
Productive.
Growing.
But not anchored.
When I finally slowed down and asked more profound questions—not about goals, but about direction—everything shifted.
I clarified a North Star rooted in:
- Building businesses that serve life, not consume it
- Creating deep, meaningful relationships
- Raising a family with presence and intention
- Growing leaders who grow others
- Creating impact at scale without sacrificing alignment
Once that vision was clear, my calendar changed.
My priorities changed.
My boundaries changed.
My business model changed.
And most importantly, my peace returned.
The 4-Part North Star Framework
Here’s the framework I use and teach to help leaders define a North Star that actually guides daily behavior.
1. Identity — Who Are You Becoming?
- Who do I want to be in 20 years?
- How do I want to show up as a leader, partner, parent, friend?
- What qualities define the best version of me?
Vision starts with identity.
2. Life Design — How Do You Want to Live?
- What does an ideal day/week look like?
- How do you spend your time and energy?
- What rhythms protect your health, relationships, and spirit?
Success without lifestyle alignment isn’t success; it’s a trap.
Remember … Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure!
3. Impact — Who Are You Here to Serve?
- Who benefits if I live fully aligned?
- What problems am I uniquely positioned to help solve?
- What legacy do I want my work to leave behind?
Purpose fuels perseverance. A wise friend once told me: the reason you are not succeeding at your full potential is that the ONLY person who wins when you win is you.
Took a while for that to sink in… but he was right at that point in my life.
Who wins when you succeed? Just you, or your family, friends, co-workers, community, city, country, world?
Remember… Life supports that which supports life!
4. Contribution — What Is Bigger Than You?
- What mission or movement are you part of?
- How does your success create opportunity for others?
- What is the ripple effect of your life fully lived?
This is what gives vision its gravity.
From Vision to Action
A North Star only works if it shows up in your daily decisions.
Before major choices, ask:
“Does this move me closer to who I’m becoming or further away?”
When vision is clear:
- You say “no” faster
- You stop overcommitting
- You build better systems
- You choose alignment over urgency
- You experience less friction and more flow
Vision doesn’t remove challenges; it gives you the fuel to get through them, and it gives meaning to the challenge itself.
