How do you know if your life is getting better or worse?

Jairek Robbins

Here are five easy ways to tell if your life and business are improving or getting worse each day/week/month.

What do a woman who is a millionaire, the world’s wealthiest man, and my grandma have in common?   They all know how to tell if their life or business is improving.

Those three people all have very different lives.  But they each know that when things are going well, you can feel it. And you can see it. It doesn’t always make sense, but you can feel the positive momentum in your life and business – even if others around you don’t seem to notice a thing. But when things are going poorly, it’s very different.  You know something is wrong, but you’re not sure what the exact problem is because everything seems just fine to others.  It’s just a subtle feeling that something isn’t right.

How do you know if your life is getting better or worse?

1. The people around you seem happier on average.

This one’s pretty easy to tell: If most people in your circle are smiling more, feeling good about themselves, and enjoying their lives, then that’s a pretty clear indication that things are going well. The reverse is also true if they’re complaining all the time and long faces everywhere you go. It can be difficult to admit, but there’s no other way around it: “If my peer group around me is happy – I’m probably doing something right.”

2. Your health is improving.

This can be a little harder to see because the indicator is subtle and not necessarily something you pay attention to daily. But if your own body feels better (i.e., fewer aches, pains, and sickness), then chances are that your life, in general, is getting better as well – whether it’s related to nutrition or just being happier with how you live each day.

3. You’re accomplishing more of what matters most to you every day/week/month etc.

If all of your hard work is paying off in ways big or small, then chances are pretty good that things are going somewhere positive for you these days: Either business-wise or personally, etc. Again this one can be difficult to see at times because there are many reasons that you might not feel as successful in your life as it is. So pay attention to how you’re feeling, what’s getting done, and how you’re progressing in your chosen path. Make sure you take time to celebrate the wins, no matter how big or small they might be.

4. Your income and net worth is growing

This one can be nuanced because many factors affect your bottom line that has nothing to do with your success as a human being. AND… in the world we live in – income gives us access to the freedoms that we desire. So try and focus on the patterns in your earnings: Are they trending up over the last few months? Up versus down? Again, you may not notice very subtle improvements, but it’s worth taking time to reflect if things are getting better or worse for those who depend on you financially – and also just for yourself.

5. You’re engaged in activities that bring you joy, fulfillment, and satisfaction

If you feel good about the work you’re doing each day, then chances are pretty good that you’re doing the right things and moving in a positive direction.

Again, this is another subtle indicator that can be very hard to see at times: If you wake up every morning dreading what comes next, then it’s time to start making changes because your life will never get any better until you decide to start doing more of what you love and less of what you hate.

Here is a quick summary of the ways to know if your life is getting better or worse on average

  1. The people around you seem happier on average.

  2. Your health is improving.

  3. You’re accomplishing more of what matters most to you every day/week/month etc.

  4. Your income and net worth is growing

  5. You’re engaged in activities that bring you joy, fulfillment, and satisfaction

Bottom line:

If you’re happy, healthy, fulfilled, and thriving, then that’s a pretty clear indication that your life is going in the right direction.

But if your friends + community are sad, you’re tired all the time, angry for no apparent reason, and things just aren’t working out the way they should, then it’s likely that your life needs some significant adjustments.

If this feels uncomfortable to think about, that’s okay. But I’d encourage you to consider your life honestly from both directions: And look for the patterns because only then can you see what needs fixing and how it all starts with you.
